DIY expert reveals how to design a small bathroom like a pro
Bathrooms are important spaces in the home.
They need to be a sanctuary of cleanliness and calm – and as close to a spa as we can make them. And you don’t have to have a huge bathroom to make the space feel special.
If you have a small, narrow, or awkwardly shaped family bathroom at home, or maybe you have a tiny downstairs loo or an en-suite that you want to update – there are plenty of design tricks to make the most of the space.
You don’t need extravagant freestanding tubs, double sinks or spacious walk-in showers to give your bathroom a stylish and practical update.
And, for many of us who have small bathrooms (usually the smallest room in the house in fact), these OTT features just aren’t possible. However, you can still create a beautiful modern bathroom with the space you have.
Hannah Conway, director of Bathrooms Of Distinction, has provided tips and products for people with small bathrooms, which will allow them to best utilise the space include everything they wish to:
‘Corner toilets and basins are a great space saver, especially if you have limited space to create your dream bathroom,’ says Hannah.
‘Not only do many main retailers and brands supply this style of toilet and basin, but they also look unique and modern, giving your bathroom an edgy look.’
Smart colour choices
When choosing a colour scheme for a small bathroom, Hannah says it can be a good idea to opt for lighter colours.
‘This will give the room an airy feel, which can also open up the room and give the illusion that it is bigger than it actually is,’ she says. ‘Incorporate lots of mirrors and opt for gloss paint to reflect any light.’
Speaking of mirrors, they are a must-have feature for any small bathroom.
‘Not only do they reflect all natural light, they can be used as a focal point for guests,’ says Hannah.
‘Mirrors come in all shapes and sizes and in many different bold designs, so there will be one that is just the right fit for your space.
‘If you do not have a lot of natural light, you can get lighting that comes with added LED backlights. You can also have the LED lighting coloured to suit decors or you can simply have warm and cool tones, to give your bathroom that added modern feel.’
If you have a small bathroom, Hannah says accessories will be your best friend -they are a great way to store the contents of your bathroom in the most suitable way for your space.
‘Using bath shower hangers to store toiletries and shower accessories can be a great solution if you have limited cabinet or cupboard space and will not take up any further room,’ she suggests.
‘Shelves of all kinds are also a great permanent option if you have the room and also make great decorations.’
