Board and Brush Creative Studio, a franchise that leads fun and artistic DIY workshops, recently opened its first location in San Diego, welcoming creators of all levels.
Doug Vocelle and Sam Grissom — the couple that owns the La Jolla outpost — said response to the workshops has been great since the studio opened in April, one of the brand’s 260 locations in 43 states. Board and Brush also has outposts in Japan through a partnership with the Cainz home improvement store chain.
“We had been in La Jolla and loved it, and knew it was the place to live in forever,” Grisson said. “We wanted to do something creative (where you can) be social and meet people.”
After moving to the upscale coastal town, the pair of former healthcare workers were inspired to open the studio by Grissom’s niece, who had recently celebrated the third anniversary a Board and Brush in Tennessee.
The La Jolla studio is in the downtown Village and offers instructor-led workshops for experienced DIY-ers and newbies.
The studio is now offering “Pick Your Project” wood projects where participants can make signs, platters, clocks, planters, benches and more. Workshops are three hours long and are under $80. Online registration is required.
In the summer, the duo plans to incorporate specialty workshops, smaller projects and kids camp classes. Materials are included in all workshops and can accommodate six to 24 people. Malt beverages, beer and snacks are available for purchase.
The studio has also partnered with La Jolla Elementary School as a sponsor of the La Jolla Open Aire Market on Sundays, where the proceeds are used to benefit art and technology programs for the school.
